what you need to know

First and most important: Don't Panic. The school community is trying new moves, aiming at improving remote learning. In the world of computers, "new" means "everyone should expect to find problems". We expect to overcome these problems by enlisting the community to report them carefully, and by enlisting the community to find solutions. That has worked in the past 70 years of computer problems, so optimism seems reasonable.

Why these steps matter:
When a teacher sets up a Zoom session, they can decide that attendees need to log into Zoom with a…
     @stuy.edu account
or a
     @nycstudents.net account.

The @stuy.edu account provides such significant advantages that I ask you to use it for this class. But many other teachers will make the other choice.

So you need to know how to switch your Zoom login between these two accounts. The instructions below show the steps to see whether your device is set up to Zoom using the "Zoom app" or in a browser (like Firefox or Safari). That knowledge will let you decide which of these instructions to follow.

"Zoom app" or browser?

See if the Zoom app is already on your computer:

If the app starts, follow the instructions below for the Zoom app. Otherwise, follow the instructions below for a browser

use the Zoom app

  1. If the app asks whether you want "join a Meeting" or "Sign in" on a screen like…
     choose to sign in
    then choose "Sign In".

  2. Whenever you reach the "Sign In" screen, click "Sign in with SSO" to use your @nycstudents.net account or "Sign in with Google" to use your @sttuy.edu account, as in this picture:
     sign in screen
    Do NOT type your email address into Zoom's sign-in screen, even though they provide a box labeled "Enter your email".

  3. If you have already signed in, the app will show you a screen like…
     already in

  4. Check which account you are signed into, by selecting your initials or avatar in the upper right. The following picture shows me signed into Zoom with my @stuy.edu account:
     signed into stuy.edu

  5. If you are already signed into Zoom with the account you need, you are ready to join the meeting your teacher set up. A link to Holmes's Intro Comp Sci class is at the bottom of this page.

  6. Otherwise (that is, if you want to switch accounts), use the avatar's "Switch Account" command:
     switch
    That will show you the Zoom app's "Sign In" window, where you can follow the instructions from this earlier step.

  7. Join the meeting your teacher set up. A link to Holmes's Intro Comp Sci class is at the bottom of this page.

use a browser

  1. Browse to Zoom's sign-in page in another browser window.

  2. If you have already signed in, the app will show you a screen like…
     already in

  3. Check which account you are signed into, by selecting your initials or avatar in the upper right. The following picture shows me signed into Zoom with my @stuy.edu account:
     signed into stuy.edu

  4. If you are already signed into Zoom with the account you need, you are ready to join the meeting your teacher set up. A link to Holmes's Intro Comp Sci class is at the bottom of this page.

  5. Otherwise (that is, if you want to switch accounts), use the avatar's "SIGN OUT" command, close that browser tab,
    and then browse to Zoom's sign-in page.

  6. Whenever you reach the "Sign In" screen, click "Sign in with SSO" to use your @nycstudents.net account or "Sign in with Google" to use your @sttuy.edu account, as in this picture:
     sign in screen
    Do NOT type your email address into Zoom's sign-in screen, even though they provide a box labeled "Email address".

  7. When you click "Sign in with SSO" to use your @nycstudents.net account, tell Zoom that "Your company domain" is "nycdoe":
     domain nycdoe

  8. Join the meeting your teacher set up. A link to Holmes's Intro Comp Sci class is at the bottom of this page.

Holmes's Intro Comp Sci meeting

  1. Verify that you are signed into Zoom with your
         @stuy.edu account,
    not a
         @nycstudents.net account.
    For instructions, see the appropriate previous section, choosing the section based on whether you are using the Zoom app or a browser (like Firefox or Safari).

  2. Then follow this link to the Waiting Room for Holmes's Intro Comp Sci session, or use Meeting ID 840 1932 2106 and Passcode 187277

    Test your configuration well before class. Testing works any time. If no class is in session, a successful test will show "Please wait for the host to start this meeting."
